چکیده

We explore the prospects for a population inversion in the hyperfine levels of atomic hydrogen at high redshifts when the Universe was still predominantly neutral. The existence of 21-cm masers during the epoch of reionisation (EoR) could greatly boost the expected EoR signals. We perform Monte-Carlo calculations of the radiative transfer of Lyα photons emitted by a source embedded in a neutral collapsing gas cloud and compute the Lyα spectrum as function of radius and time. In such scenarios, the Lyα color temperature may be negative in large volumes surrounding the source. Classically, for sources with Lyα luminosities exceeding ∼ 10 − 10 erg s, a population inversion in the hyperfine transition via the Wouthuysen-Field effect is established, thus resulting in a 21-cm maser. However, quantum interference can strongly reduce the strength of the WF-effect in the Lyα line wings, which implies that the required Lyα luminosities should be larger by orders of magnitude. Furthermore, we show that the astrophysical conditions that are required to establish a population inversion are very difficult to meet: A low flux of Lyα photons produced via x-ray and/or cosmic ray heating, or through cascades of atoms which are photo-excited by higher Lyman-series photons, can cause Tα to become positive. If, despite these obstacles, 21-cm masers do exist then we find that the background Cosmic Microwave background could be amplified by a maximum factor of ∼ 100, and maser saturation is not important.

Cosmologically distant OH megamasers: A test of the galaxy merging rate at Z ≈ 2 and a contaminant of blind HI surveys in the 21cm line

Bright OH megamaser galaxies, radiating 1667/1665 MHz lines, could be detected at redshifts from z ≈ 1 to 3 in moderate integration times with existing radio telescopes. The superluminous FIR galaxies that host the megamasers are relatively rare at z ≈ 0, but they may have been more common at high redshift, if the galaxy merger rate increases steeply with redshift. Therefore, blind radio spectr...

Separating out the Alcock-Paczyński Effect on 21cm Fluctuations

We reconsider the Alcock-Paczyński effect on 21cm fluctuations from high redshift, focusing on the 21cm power spectrum. We show that at each accessible redshift both the angular diameter distance and the Hubble constant can be determined from the power spectrum. Furthermore, this is possible using anisotropies that depend only on linear density perturbations and not on astrophysical sources of ...

The 21cm Power Spectrum After Reionization

We discuss the 21cm power spectrum (PS) following the completion of reionization. In contrast to the reionization era, this PS is proportional to the PS of mass density fluctuations, with only a small modulation due to fluctuations in the ionization field on scales larger than the mean-free-path of ionizing photons. We derive the form of this modulation, and demonstrate that its effect on the 2...

WMAP3 Results and the Observability of Reionization at Redshifted 21cm

We present results from two new large scale simulations of the Epoch of Reionization based on the new 3 year WMAP cosmological parameters. For these parameters the peak of the reionization process falls below redshift 10, and hence above frequencies of 140 MHz, which should make it more easily observable with an instrument such as SKA. We present some global reionization history parameters and ...

Probing the Epoch of Early Baryonic Infall Through 21cm Fluctuations

After cosmological recombination, the primordial hydrogen gas decoupled from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and fell into the gravitational potential wells of the dark matter. The neutral hydrogen imprinted acoustic oscillations on the pattern of brightness fluctuations due to its redshifted 21cm absorption of the CMB. Unlike CMB temperature fluctuations which probe the power spectrum at...
